Navigating the Windows 10 End-of-Life Transition: Upgrade or Explore Alternatives

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will reach its End-of-Life on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, technical support, or feature updates for Windows 10.

For many Windows PCs built since 2019, a seamless, free upgrade to Windows 11 is likely available. You can check your PC’s eligibility for the free upgrade by going to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and selecting Check for updates. Alternatively, you can download and install the PC Health Check app from Microsoft. If you would like assistance with this transition, please get in touch with the Club’s Technology Center at 717-464-6330 or reach out to one of our Windows volunteers listed on the “Get Help” page of our website at https://wvcomputerclub.org/operating-systems/windows-os/.

If your computer is older, it may not be able to be upgraded to Windows 11 for several reasons. There are some options.

  • Microsoft is offering a one-year Extended Security Updates program for $30. Although details are not yet available, this will enable your Windows 10 computer to remain protected until October 2026.
  • Consider upgrading to a new or refurbished PC before the October deadline. The Club recommends a PC with an Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor, 16GB of RAM, and at least 512GB of internal storage. Other specifications, such as laptop vs. desktop, screen size, additional storage, and weight, are more specific to your needs.
  • Continue to use Windows 10 without security updates. The Club DOES NOT RECOMMEND THIS OPTION.

It is unlikely that WVCC will have inventory on hand to supply more than a few of the requests for newer hardware. Volunteers at WVCC and the Technology Center can assist you in deciding on your options. Volunteers may also be able to assist in transferring information from your old computer to your new one. We anticipate a higher volume of requests as we approach the October deadline.
